Hamilton could be the first city in New Zealand with an “online CBD” thanks to some nifty problem-solving from locals.

Hamilton Central Business Association has commissioned the website builder Storbie to create the Hamilton Central Marketplace – a website that not only acts as a directory for the city’s 1200 central city retailers and property owners, but also allows visitors to browse products and services, and buy them.

Storbie chief executive Shane Bartle said the project was one of the first marketplaces the company had worked on since developing the concept, and was the biggest.

He said the project was also aimed at helping more businesses get online – often an expensive and scary idea for small to medium retailers.

“What we’re hoping is that this will get a lot more Hamilton businesses online, to kind of demystify it for them,” he said.

“Every business already online will be able to link straight to the central website, with their products and services visible. Those that don’t have websites can sign up.”
