Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Guide – Step 1: Introduction

Strong SEO increases your visibility so your business can be found in online searches. The steps to improving your SEO will also help make the experience better for consumers by providing the information they need to make an informed choice.

Over the course of eight instalments, we’ll take you through the steps to optimise your SEO on your Storbie website, including keywords, images, heading tags, and accessibility.

The first step is to understand what SEO is, and why it’s important.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, and it’s the process of making your page visible by online search engines, like Google and Bing.

When you type in a search criteria, the engine figures out the most relevant pages by searching their index of the web and working out what’s relevant.

Before the internet, libraries were often the place to find our answers. Picture yourself being a librarian in a massive library surrounded by hundreds of thousands of books. Someone approaches you and asks: “what is the answer to life?”

To provide results to their query, you need to search through each book. But with there being so many, it makes sense to focus on a few key elements.

You begin by checking the title of those books, the contents, and skim the pages. You’ll consider the credibility of that book, and the quality of it, as well as the book’s accessibility to this person. You’ll think about topical information and what’s most up-to-date.

You then present some science, religion, and philosophy books… and Douglas Adams’ “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” which gives the quick answer of 42.

Effectively the same thing happens with search engines, except across a much larger and exponentially growing library, and at a much, much faster speed. The more boxes your website ticks, and the simpler that information is, the higher the ranking and the more likely your business is made visible in online searches.

Why is SEO important?

Most people when searching for a product or business will jump onto a search engine like Google. 91% of searchers do not go past the first page of results. Strong SEO is what pushes your business to the top of the first page to ensure you’re seen.

SEO is the best organic (unpaid) way to be acknowledged online.

By accurately describing your website, pages, and products that you have to offer, as well as being accessible on different platforms (like mobile), you’re more likely to be shown to consumers by search engines.

The same as a book has a title, contents, and pages, so does your website.

The image has already been added, the product has been named, and there is a price. You may think that’s all that’s required, but there are a few things that need to be included to really get SEO working.
